A series of undulating monumental structures set against an aspen copse near Wilson, Wyoming, this mountain home serves as a creative retreat for a California grounded couple. The 35- acre property is set at the base of the Tetons and encompasses several ecosystems, with old- growth timber incorporating into daises of youthful pine and aspen trees before transitioning into rolling meadows. The homeowners, authors who also enjoy and manage an independent record marker out of Mill Valley, California, were looking for a nature- acquainted village in Wyoming in which to pursue their jotting practice. Composed of three structures( main house, guest house, and pen’s plant), the home is arranged as a set of simple box- suchlike volumes, each designed in response to its specific position. The 6,000 square- bottom main house is conceived as a geologic remnant in the geography, located on the edge between field and timber. The 1,577 square- bottom guest house and 580 square- bottom pen’s plant are nestled more privately within the wooded terrain. A fourth, spiritually focused structure has yet to be erected and will be sited further to the south. The armature is open, with broad views to mountain lookouts of the Grand Tetons, natural fauna, timbers, and meadows. Rectilinear in plan, the main house appears to snare girding trees as anchors, sinking in the center, and pulling overhead toward the sky at the corners.
Working in musicale with the geography, this dynamic quality is carried through the structure’s charred shou sugi ban surface, dragged and sculpted to produce protuberances and openings. The entrance to the home is located where the structure reaches out over a tableland creek, the relationship revealed by a moment of translucency in the bottom. The wood surface wraps into the interior as light Atlantic cedar, which also dissolves into subtle cataplasm and bottom- to- ceiling glass. Each window frames a view of the champaign and Teton range beyond. An east- facing fireplace provides a negation to the views, and an intimate yard allows southern light to access the center of the home. In addition to the common kitchen, living, and dining spaces, the home includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms, laundry room, and an extensive mudroom for the customer’s Irish wolfhounds. Wood, sword, citation, custom cast white concrete, blanched cedar, and large crossbeams of travertine and onyx define the material palette. Italian limestone is stressed as bottoms in the primary bath, and is also stressed for the custom bathtub, which was water spurt cut from a single block of limestone to produce a striking monolithic and sculptural design element. This makes the alternate time the interior developer has worked with the guests, the first case at their home in Mill Valley.
The customer’s bohemian life and love of music, literature and the great outside were the alleviation behind the interior design. They love comfort, layers and texture, quaint pieces and a home that’s inviting to family and musketeers and laid back enough for their tykes . Every face has been elevated, with artisan details like the custom- designed, tattoo- inspired bas relief concrete on the fireplace compass, hand- painted custom wallpaper showpieces, and the geometric motifs carried throughout the design. The earth- toned palette with pops of mustard, color and deep Burgundy is pointed by collectible pieces, quaint discoveries, and contemporary art.
